Recent spills at sea, both in ports and on the shoreline – such as the pollution of the Peruvian coastline in 2022, the X-Press Pearl spill off Colombo (Sri Lanka), pollution in Corsica in summer 2021, the Wakashio spill in 2020, the Grande America spill, the Ulysse Virginia spill and the pollution from the Lubrizol plant in the port of Rouen in 2018 – are constant reminders of the need for technical training for decision-makers and field operators, highlighting the importance of synergy between the key response players. It is important that these players – local authorities, emergency services, ports and industry – become increasingly involved in both spill preparedness and response, and are trained to do so. Every year, Cedre thus organises numerous training sessions on spill response at sea and on the shorelinerun to IMO Level 2 standards, at its facilities and around the world, comprising theory and practice, attended by a broad range of participants.

This refresher course aims to update the knowledge acquired during these courses

  • Course aims

As a reminder, the overall objective of the training course on "Oil spill response at sea and on the shoreline", run to IMO Level 2 standards, is to provide concrete, practical knowledge of strategies, techniques and equipment for responding to oil spills in coastal areas.

This refresher course reviews all the topics addressed during the initial training course and offers trainees that chance to refresh their skills and knowledge in order to update their theoretical and practical knowledge of response strategies and techniques in case of oil spills at sea and on the shoreline.

This refresher course comprises theory modules only.

By the end of this course, trainees will have refreshed and expanded their knowledge and will be capable of:

    - Selecting: the most appropriate equipment for their site’s specific risks

    - Defining: the operational tactics and procedures required for its deployment, and even contribute to the development of a contingency plan.
